Trump’s remark came as US special envoy Steve Witkoff reached Moscow to have “serious discussion” with the Kremlin on the temporary ceasefire proposal of 30-days.
US President Donald Trump on Thursday said that he hopes Russia will do the right thing on Ukraine, and that he thinks President Vladimir Putin would not attack US allies as the Kremlin leader agreed in principle with the American proposal of a temporary ceasefire with Ukraine.
Trump’s remark came as US special envoy Steve Witkoff reached Moscow to have “serious discussion” with the Kremlin on the temporary ceasefire proposal of 30-days, as Putin backed the idea of truce but raised questions about its implementation.
Talking to reporters during an Oval Office meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Donald Trump said “Hopefully they’ll do the right thing.”
When asked if there was a possibility that Russia could attack US allies, Trump responded saying “It’s not going to happen. We’ll make sure it doesn’t happen.”
Trump’s special envoy Witkoff, who reached Moscow on Thursday, is poised to meet Russian President Putin the same night, according to reports from Russian state-owned news outlet Izvestia.
Trump said that he would love to meet and talk with Putin but asked to get the war over as soon as possible.
“A lot of the details of a final agreement have actually been discussed. Now we’re going to see if Russia is there and, if not, it will be a very disappointing moment for the world,” Trump stated.
Putin further said that Russia would take any further step in the war with Ukraine until the situation on the ground is clear.
